Rhynchostylis are also commonly called foxtail orchids because of their long, thin, densely packed inflorescences with sweetly fragrant blooms. The inflorescences appear in autumn and winter. In our, Singaporean climate, it generally flowers about 1-3 times a year depending on climate. Its flowers are highly fragrant and last up to 3 weeks in our climate. It has very powerful Citrus smell. This was most difficult for us to find as it blooms primarily in Jan and Feb.

The generic name, ‘children of the air’, is derived from Greek aer (air) and eides (resembling), referring to its epiphytic nature and the way such orchids are cultivated. A. crispa is a large, tough, robust epiphyte. Young leaves are typically covered with purple spots. In?orescence is up to 35 cm long, drooping, branching, loosely many-flowered. Ear-drops prepared by boiling the pulverised plant in neem oil, are instilled 2–3 drops at a time into the ear every night to treat earache in the Western Ghats. A. crispa contains aeridin, a bactericidal phenanthropyran. The contribution of aeridin to the management of earache is undetermined, but it works as a bactericide.

As soon as she returned to Singapore she developed Singapore Girl. Since the beginning, Singapore Girl was a favorite among locals and tourists and sold very well at department stores, and hotels.

In fact, in the early 1970s, Perfumes of Orient and another massive perfume business called Perfumes of Singapore, owned by her soon to be next husband, Mr. Dadi Balsara, merged to become Perfumes of Singapore Pte Ltd.
